This review is based on personal experience and customer reviews around the internet.

My personal experience with single serve coffee maker came about a year ago when my old braun finally kicked the bucket. I scoured the internet as you are right now looking for a maker with the proper brew temperature, thermal carafe etc. I had a friend that suggested I tried the new “k-cup makers” and initially I blew it off thinking it would be too hard to find the k cups and too much hassle.

She invited me over the following week and of course served me coffee. From that moment on I was a believer. It was my first experience with Green Mountain Coffee  Columbian Roast. The next cup I insisted on making and it was so much fun putting in the selected (decaf) k-cup in the holder and pressing the appropriate button and viola fresh coffee in less than 30 seconds. Experiencing it this way made me realize how great it would be to have a different flavor every cup. I read many reviews and decided to buy the Keurig B60 and I will never go back. I actually think that every household will convert and this is the modern way to drink coffee.

If you’re trying to make a decision between the Keurig B40,B50,and B60 and the Senseo or Tassimo. The Keurig line hands down beats the distant competition in the temperature, construction quality and variety of flavors.

Negatives – The only negative IA can think of is the price of the Keurig machines are normally a bit higher ranging between $79 and $179. You can catch them on sale but I find that Amazon has the best prices and I searched high and low.

Senseo Single Serve Coffee Maker

The Senseo single serve brewer uses different coffee packages called pods. There are different models to choose but mainly are based on color not features. Insert the pod and add water then push a button.

Negatives: Less expensive but also I hear the pods are not as good

Positives: More variety and selection in pods. You can also find them at the local supermarket

The London Stock Exchange Limited (LSE) is the world’s oldest stock exchange and one of the top three stock exchanges in the world, after the new York and Tokyo exchanges. Founded in 1773 and reincorporated as a private limited company in 1986, the LSE is also the world leader in international share trading. The LSE operates a number of market products, including the main board listing, featuring more than 3,000 companies and including over 500 international companies, as well as the secondary AIM (Alternative Investment Market), established in 1995 as a vehicle for trades in small, high-growth companies. more than 70 companies are listed on the AIM board. after launching the Stock Exchange Electronic Trading Services (SETS) in 1997, the LSE introduced a new listing, techMARK, tailored to the specific needs of the high-technology sector and designed to compete with the NASDAQ index. With a total equity turnover value of more than £3.5 billion, the LSE achieved gross revenues of £149.8 million in 1999. The LSE is led by Chairman John Kemp-Welch and CEO Gavin Casey.

Founded in 1773, the LSE reflects more than 200 years of the development of share-based enterprise. The world’s first joint-stock company was created in the mid-16th century. Traditionally, companies were either owned by a single individual or through a partnership with two or more owners. while this arrangement sufficed for smaller businesses and stable market sectors, direct financial responsibility for riskier endeavors–such as the great trade exploration voyages of the period–were judged too precarious for an individual or limited group of investors. The organization of such a venture, that of a voyage to trace a northern sea route to the far East from London in 1553, introduced the world’s first shareholder-based company. Selling shares to a larger number of investors reduced the financial risk for each individual investor, while enabling the company itself to raise the capital needed to fund its operations.

This first joint-stock company failed to find a northern sea route to the far East. However, a meeting with Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible brought the company the exclusive rights to trade between Russia and England. The Muscovy Company, as it came to be called, became a commercial success, rewarded its shareholders with large profits, and inspired the creation of new investment ventures. The Muscovy Company served as the model for future shareholder-based companies. Investors contributed capital funding, while direction of the company’s operations remained in the hands of its management. The investors, who were allowed to sell their holdings or buy more shares, were given dividends according to the company’s profits.

As more companies were set up following the Muscovy model, a new profession came into being, that of the broker, who acted as a middleman for trades of shares, helping to boost not only the number of joint-stock companies but also the number of investors. Adding impetus to this movement was the foundation of the Bank of England as a joint-stock company by King William III in order to provide funding for England’s military campaign against France at the end of the 17th century. The shareholder system was given further support by legislation to limit and punish brokers for malpractice.

By the 18th century, a flourishing “market” for shares was in place–so much so that the period marked the first stock market crash in 1720. while trading took place at the Royal Exchange through the middle of the century, the rowdy behavior–itself to become something of a tradition on the market floor–of certain brokers led to their exclusion. Instead of leaving the business, these brokers began meeting at Jonathan’s Coffee House and other coffee shops in the Threadneedle Street area of London. In 1760, some 150 brokers founded their own club to buy and sell stock at Jonathan’s. The following decade, in 1773, the members of the club changed its name to the Stock Exchange.

As the individual broker members of the Stock Exchange began to establish brokerage firms, and the number of markets expanded, the Stock Exchange saw a need for new quarters. In 1801, the Stock Exchange began construction on a new building at what was to become its permanent London location. The following year, the Stock Exchange published a Deed of Settlement, formally outlining the operating rules and procedures of the stock market.

If the original joint-stock companies were formed to provide funding for the many voyages of discovery, overseas trading, and foreign military campaigns, the shareholder-based company structure showed itself easily adaptable to the changing economic landscape of the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution, coupled with such major infrastructure undertakings as the building of a national railroad system, provided the basis for the modern period of shareholder-b

Black & Decker Brew N Go Coffee Maker Review One Cup Single

When we first got the coffee maker home I was a bit concerned that it felt cheaply made, but it’s held up well after about 20 uses. It has a small footprint on the counter and brews a surprisingly good cup of coffee. The permanent filter works well with a medium grind but don’t go to fine if you don’t want specks of coffee beans in the bottom of your mug.

Some people have complained about about coffee grinds flowing over the top sides of the basket. Black & Decker recommends 2.5 tbsps of coffee but I have been able to get away with 3.5 tbsps and it not overflow. I once went to 4 tbsps but it poured over and ruined my morning cup so keep it within reason and you will be O.K.

One great thing about the Black & Decker Brew ‘N Go is no carafe to clean out. Just throw your coffee mug in the dishwasher and your done.

Sometimes I think there just might be a God

Bob and Jane Cull bought a house in suburban Ft. Worth, Texas in 1996 for about $233,000. It promptly started falling apart on them. they sued the builder. An arbitration ruling went for the Culls in the amount of $800,000.

The builder spent $1 million fighting the $800,000. And yesterday, a lower court in Texas awarded the Culls $51 million.

The builder is Bob Perry, the chief financial backer of the 2004 Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and of various other right-wing outfits.

The story is actually even worse than the above. The case originally worked its way up to the state supreme court. The supremes — every one whom received a campaign contribution from Perry, according to news story I linked to above — vacated the arbitration award and kicked the matter back down to a lower court. And it was that lower court that produced the $51 million ruling.

Perry will of course appeal again, and who knows, the bastard may never pay a penny. But one can at least take pleasure in the likelihood that he’s suffering today. not just because he financed a group of ideological hate-mongers, but because he also appears to be at least a partially lousy human being.

Meanwhile, not to post-jack my own blog or anything, but the big topic in Washington today will be this story. I’ll be back in a little while with some developed thoughts on it. rather fascinating.

Black and Decker Home Cafe | Single Serve Coffee Maker

Review of Black and Decker Home Cafe GT300.

An upgraded Black and Decker Home Cafe for single serve coffee.

With the improvements they made for the Black and Decker Home Cafe GT300, the question we should ask ourselves is, “Have they really improved their single serve coffee maker and addressed the complaints of the old one?”

Yes they improved the old version called the HCC100, which had problems like a plastic taste to the coffee, hard to open pod chamber and questions to sturdiness quality.

The pod chamber for the GT300 is much improved as it is easier to open and insert your coffee pods. There were a lot of complaints regarding the coffee pod chamber of the old one as it regularly jammed. Although the newer model also has problems with its new push down mechanism, you won’t experience that muchproblem with it.

A good thing about the Black and Decker Home Cafe GT300 is that it can hold larger or specialty coffee pods because it has a single coffee pod holder, a double coffee pod holder, and the specialty pod holder which is used for cappuccino pods. It can also brew tea pods and size 62 mm coffee pods. Only a few single serve coffee makers can take the 62 mm coffee pod.

Because of this you can choose 7, 9, and 14 oz settings and with its removal drip tray you can fit larger mugs and medium height travel mugs.

It also has a nice design but there are times when it looks out of this world that it reminds me of it being part of an Alien VS Predator series. I’m quite serious on that one. but the design still looks works for me.

As for ease of use, it is quite easy to use this Black and Decker Home Cafe as it uses coffee pods. you simply remove the water reservoir from the back of the unit, fill it with water, open the new and improved coffee pod chamber unit and insert your coffee pod of choice. In less than a minute you’ll be getting your coffee.

Some things they didn’t improve on…

Just like the HCC100, there are still a lot of complaints regarding the plastic taste to the coffee that the Black and Decker Home Cafe GT300 makes. I don’t understand why they can’t improve on this if other single serve coffee maker companies can. maybe they should consider changing plastic suppliers or even have it outsourced in another company.

Althought they improved their quality there are still minor sturdiness issues. this comes from it being majority being made out of plastic.

Product Features

  • Brew 7, 9 and 14 ounce beverages, tea and creamy beverages
  • Easy to use push-button controls
  • Cleaning Cycle
  • Removable Cup Booster / Drip Tray
  • Robust Design

Conclusions:

There have been mixed reviews ever since they launched the Black and Decker Home Cafe and I think the complaints are valid especially when it came to its quality.

On top of that, there are still a lot of people complaining about the plastic taste even after cleaning the coffee pod maker many times. It may sound like a cliche, but at the end of the day (or should we say at the start of the day), the taste of the coffee that your coffee makers produces is what matters. Single serve coffee makers make it very convenient for you to make a great cup of coffee but if the taste is sacrificed too much, I’m sorry but this just won’t work for me. this goes for you too.

Looking at Amazon.com user reviews for the Black and Decker Home Cafe GT300 in early 2010, it’s interesting to see that out of the 102 who reviewed this one 30 gave it a 5-star while 32 gave it a 1-star. It looks like it’s a love it or hate it type of coffee machine.

If you’re looking for a single serve coffee maker for your coffee pods, I suggest you go with a Senseo coffee maker. but if you really want a Black and Decker brand, you can try something they’re known for – their Black and Decker Spacemaker coffee maker. you should be fine with that especially for a small counter in your kitchen.

Students take a look into their futures

The countywide event, the third annual Career Expo, was held at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie. It attracted about 400 students and nearly as many parents.

Discussions ranged from how to get a security clearance, which is necessary for many of the new government jobs coming to this region, to how to land a backstage career in the arts. Exhibitors included utility linemen, bankers and engineers.

Horizon Logan, 13 and an eighth-grader at Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School, said he wants to be a professional dancer, but was grateful for the chance to learn about the business side of managing theaters and dance companies.

“I learned you have to prepare yourself,” he said.

Horizon’s mother, Marinthia Logan, said the very existence of the Careers Expo was encouraging.

“I thought it was interesting that professionals came out today and gave up their Saturdays for kids,” she said. “It shows that the future really does matter.”

One major topic of conversation throughout the day was the need for developing realistic expectations.

Michael Lietz, for example, staffed a booth for the Washington Nationals, but he wasn’t there recruiting center fielders and left-handed batters.

Lietz, a champion wrestler and all-round athlete who graduated from South River High School in 2005, now works in the Nat’s public relations office.

“You might be good, but chances are you are not going to be good enough to be a pro – you are going to need an education,” Lietz told the eager young people who stopped at his booth to talk.

“I am here not because I played sports, I am here because I got an education,” said Lietz, who majored in sports management at York College in Pennsylvania.

“Even if you do make it, all it takes is one …” Lietz said snapping his fingers to indicate a sudden mishap.

Lietz, who said he loves working in the Nats’ office, said that one of the best ways to get started working is as an intern. he was an intern with the Nats and the Red Skins, for example, before being brought back to the Nats as a paid employee.

Retired Navy Capt. Chip Seymour, former admissions director at the Naval Academy, conducted a session dedicated to college admissions.

“Anyone who is in the 8th or 9th grades right now will be living for about 70 years after college,” he said at the start of his talk. “How you do in high school will have a great impact on how those 70 years play out.”

Seymour’s pointers ranged from triple checking spelling on all admissions essays, to visiting as many colleges as possible while in high school.

He also told students to look at each school’s graduation rates, to see what percentage of freshmen go on to graduate.

“Don’t eliminate a college as a possible choice just because of the cost,” Seymour said. “Some universities are actually spending down their endowments and waiving tuition and (in some cases) even room and board.”

    Clearances and finances

Tim Sullivan, chief of security for the Defense Information Systems Agency, told students that financial difficulties are the largest single reason security clearances get denied.

Fifty percent of all denials are because applicants don’t pay their bills, have liens against them or don’t pay their taxes, Sullivan said. That’s twice the rate of denials because of drug and alcohol abuse.

“It all comes back to following the rules,” he said of why people who cannot manage their personal affairs are not given security clearances.

Another session was dedicated to discussing personal finances.

Jaclyn Murray, vice president at SunTrust Investments Services, cautioned about the dangers of instant gratification.

Anyone who bought a first-edition iPod when the product was released on Oct. 23, 2001, paid $399 and about $28 in taxes, Murray said, plus an estimated $495 downloading music, for a total of $922.

That 2001 iPod now brings about $46 on the Internet, she said.

On the other hand, anyone who on that same date bought $922 in Apple stock, the maker of iPod, would have $11,127 today, Murray said.

To give a simpler example, she noted that a $4-a-day cup of coffee habit costs $1,000 a year.

“Save $1 a day with interest, and at the end of five years, you will have $2,483,” she said. “The take-away message is that the fastest growing segment of bankruptcy in the population is 20 to 24, and the average college student has $8,000 in credit card debt.”

    Bright future

Career Expo is sponsored by the 21st Century Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to work with Anne Arundel County Schools to encourage students to be successful, and to give them real-world advice.

“This is about careers, not jobs,” said Nicholas Lambrow, president of M&T Bank’s Chesapeake and Central Maryland Division, and a founder of the 21st Century Education Foundation. “It is about how to make better career choices at a younger age.”

While the expo offered a number of cautionary tales, it also gave students some reason for optimism.

Engineering jobs will be plentiful in the future, said Raymond Streib, president of DFI, a Millersville-based engineering firm.

“We need engineers; fewer and fewer people are becoming engineers,” Streib said. “The infrastructure of our country is getting older, and we need to upgrade. you see water mains breaking, bridges are crumbling, highways are deteriorating – five to six years from now, about the time some of these kids are graduating from college, there is going to be a tremendous demand for engineers.”
